Material Description
Silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) ceramics is an inorganic non-metallic compound with strong covalent bonds. Its basic structural unit is a tetrahedron where the silicon atom is located at the center and four nitrogen atoms are located at the four vertices. This forms a continuous and strong network structure in three-dimensional space, resulting in exceptional material properties.
Silicon nitride exists in three crystal forms, with two common types:
  • α-Si₃N₄: Needle-like crystals, white or off-white in color
  • β-Si₃N₄: Darker colored, dense granular polyhedron or short prism
Both are hexagonal crystal structures. The α phase has higher hardness but is chemically unstable compared to the β phase, which transforms at high temperatures. Therefore, β-Si₃N₄ is the primary form used in silicon nitride ceramics.

Physical Properties
  • Thermal properties: High-temperature refractory substance with no melting point, decomposes at approximately 1900°C under normal pressure

  • Resistance to acid, alkali and salt corrosion: Soluble in hydrofluoric acid but resistant to dilute acids
Mechanical Properties
  • Excellent high-temperature strength with minimal strength attenuation at 1200°C compared to room temperature
  • Very low high-temperature creep rate due to strong covalent bonds
  • High hardness, second only to superhard materials like diamond, cubic BN, and B₄C
  • Low friction coefficient with self-lubricating properties similar to oiled metal surfaces

High Temperature Applications: One of the few monolithic ceramic materials capable of surviving severe thermal shocks and thermal gradients in hydrogen/oxygen rocket engines.
Medical Applications: Used in orthopedic applications and as an alternative to PEEK and titanium in spinal fusion devices. The hydrophilic, microstructured surface contributes to strength, durability and reliability.
